Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

WIC and Lactation Support Services at G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center Supporting Healthy Families in Our Community

The G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center WIC Program is committed to helping women, infants, and children build a healthy foundation for life. Through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), eligible families receive nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to healthcare and community resources.

Our WIC team is dedicated to providing families with education, resources, and personalized support throughout pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood.

Who Qualifies for WIC?

WIC services are available to eligible:

  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women
  • Postpartum women
  • Infants
  • Children up to 5 years of age

Eligibility is based on income and nutritional risk. WIC also provides specialized services for participants with additional nutritional or medical needs.

G.A. Carmichael WIC provides services to help families access healthy foods and the education and resources needed to support healthy growth and development.

How to Apply for WIC

Interested families can contact the G.A. Carmichael WIC Program to learn more about eligibility and schedule an appointment.

During the enrollment process, applicants may be asked to provide documentation such as:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Mississippi residency
  • Proof of household income
  • Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF documentation, when applicable

Our WIC staff can help applicants understand the application process and determine what documentation is needed.

WIC Services & Benefits

G.A. Carmichael WIC offers a variety of services designed to promote the health, safety, and well-being of women, infants, and children.

Nutrition Education

Participants receive individualized nutrition education and counseling based on their nutritional needs and stage of life.

Education may include:

  • Healthy eating during pregnancy
  • Infant and child nutrition
  • Introduction of solid foods
  • Healthy family meals
  • Nutrition for breastfeeding mothers
  • Healthy growth and development
  • Food safety and healthy lifestyle choices
Healthy Food Benefits

Eligible participants receive WIC food benefits to help provide nutritious foods for themselves and their families.

Benefits may include approved:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Milk and dairy products
  • Eggs
  • Cereal
  • Beans and peanut butter
  • Infant foods
  • Infant formula, when appropriate
  • Other WIC-approved foods

Food benefits are based on each participant's individual WIC food package.

Health Assessments

WIC provides health and nutrition assessments that may include:

  • Height and weight checks
  • Iron checks
  • Nutritional assessments
  • Specialized assessments for high-risk participants

G.A. Carmichael WIC also provides specialized assessments and support for participants with needs such as premature infants, special formula requirements, pregnancy-related nutritional concerns, and digestive or developmental disorders.

Referrals

WIC participants may receive referrals to healthcare and community resources, including:

  • Medical care
  • Dental care
  • Medicaid
  • SNAP
  • TANF
  • Other community programs
  • State and federal assistance programs
Car Seat Safety & Education

G.A. Carmichael WIC is committed to helping families keep their infants and children safe while traveling.

Car seats may be available to eligible WIC participants, along with education on proper car seat use and child passenger safety. Availability and eligibility requirements may apply.

Participants interested in receiving a car seat should contact their local WIC office for information about eligibility, required education, and availability.

Breastfeeding Services

G.A. Carmichael WIC is committed to supporting mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.

Our breastfeeding services may include:

  • Breastfeeding education
  • Individual breastfeeding counseling
  • Breastfeeding classes
  • Lactation support
  • Breastfeeding supplies
  • Breast pumps for eligible participants
  • Breastfeeding support during pregnancy and after delivery
  • Home visits, when available
  • Referrals to additional breastfeeding resources

Our goal is to provide mothers with the knowledge, encouragement, and support they need to meet their breastfeeding goals.

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday
8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Friday
8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
